This may account for the initial decrease of the pH (acidification)
but not the pH increase (alkalyzation) which occurs in the late
stages of digestion (illustrated to the right).
In order to explain this second phase of pH change (the increase in the pH) we need to assume some mechanism which causes inactivation of the proton pumps. |
